Family Engagement Events Kickoff

Victoria ISD’s efforts to provide parent engagement opportunities are expanding with the help of community members. Parent engagement in schools is when parents and school staff work together to support and improve the learning, development, and health of students.

On December 3, 2020, VISD pre-kindergarten students will go home with their first themed parent engagement bag. Engagement opportunities will focus on reading, language, writing, social studies, social and emotional, math, science, fine arts, physical development, and technology. The first theme is titled, “Making Family Memories.” During this virtual event, Gary Moses, a community member and a former VISD teacher, will take part through a read-along of the book My Heart Fills With Happiness by Monique Gray Smith.

“Parents create the environments and experiences in which learning happens, which makes them the first teachers their children will ever have,” explained VISD Early Childhood Coordinator Carol Dippel. “Parents play a critical role in a child’s language development and language development has a direct correlation to reading success.”

Community members are also getting involved in parent engagement opportunities. Local organizations, such as H-E-B, have provided some of the ingredients needed for the science portion of the engagement events, where students will learn to explore using their five senses to observe, compare, predict, and question through making pancakes with their family. This portion also focuses on the idea that cooking together is a great way to make memories and learn science, showing where parents and the school work together.
